I am a Mavs fan. The east has it much easier but I am excited for the playoffs.
As much as I do not want the Spurs to come out of them west, they have the playoff experience and they are healthier this year then they have been in the years that they have won it all. In the east, I do not believe anyone will be able to match the Celtics and Pistons. I believe the Pistons however will go to the finals and win againts the Spurs, this will be Detroit's last chance to be the favorite to win because starting next year the Celtics will be the favorite out of the East.

im going to say the spurs. last year, san antonio and detroit had the two best records in the nba, and nobody picked the mavs OR the heat to make it, except mavs and heat fans. everyone was 100% either the spurs or the pistons would win. this year, everyone is sure the mavs and suns will slug it out in the western conference finals, and whoever wins that will win the nba. first of all, dont forget about the all of a sudden offensive dynamite in detroit. second, i wouldn't take the Heat because dwyane wade is their best 4th quarter player, and he's injured. the mavs look like the automatic pick, but their lack of interior defense will bite them. last year, although they beat the spurs, duncan consistently lit em up. dont forget, last year the mavs barely beat the spurs. in game 7, with the spurs up by 3, ginobili stupidly fouls nowitzki on a 3 point play. they should have won that game... take the quiet and underrated spurs

All teams who have had 51-9 or better records at 60 games have won the NBA Finals, and they're the only team to have 3 streaks of 12 or more games, showing that they can rebound after just one loss. The Heat are Wade-less, so they're chances are slim to none. The Spurs (and the Suns) have to go through a tough West conference as well as the Mavs. Not to mention the Mavs have the best conference record (32-6). If they can beat the Suns next week, they'll be invincible coming into the playoffs.

It's not that we both like the Phoenix Suns but here are the facts:
1.Before they traded Marion, Suns was at the top of the Western standings, even up to now, they are just 1 game behind the Lakers.
2.When they got Shaq, which is obviously better than others one would might think. (That they got an old garbage one) Which I think is the opposite. Even before Shaq arrived, Suns are already a scoring machine which they can get 10 or more points from of course, Amare and Steve plus Grant, Boris and Raja. And add Giricek for a 3pt whenever they will double team Shaq or Amare.
3.NBA is also a business which you handle people and a lot of people for that matter wherein you as the Manager should keep everybody happy, in high morale.
Keeping Marion will just make things worst for the Suns in the long haul.
Therefore, with Shaq around as a leader and an experienced veteran with 3 rings and 3 finals MVP, the Suns, OUR SUNS, will never go wrong come playoff time.

I say that that no matter how bad a team may seem to be one season, with hard work and time to develop their young players, they can win it again at some point in time. all they need is time. the bulls of the 70s were horrible, but they were able to build a championship team. i think what the C's need is patience.

how come they always try and get as much money as they can and a long term deal? I understand the difference between 10 million and 20 million is huge, but just ask Barkley, he'd probably trade that 10 million for a championship. I see guys like Kobe getting the max they can get and then complain because no one else on the team is great. Well, when you can't afford to get anyone else, then that's what happens. I'm not in their shoes, but I feel that there should be a new mentality in the NBA with money. Hey, if you can make 5 million a year, plus endorsement money, that should be enough. Then your team can get several other big stars with the same mentality and then you have a championship team for maybe a decade if the chemistry is right. It needs to be more about being a great team than about it all being about money! That's if you want to win. If you want to just be rich, then I say go for it, MAX contract!! You pretty much answered your own question, and I, too, empathize with what you are saying. The problem is that most celebrities (whether athlete, actor, etc...) are put on a pedestal, are told by their agents, and entourage, and fans, etc... just how good they are. These people feed that ego so that any clear-thinking individual is now no longer clearly thinking, ergo, the dichotomy between getting the fat paycheck or winning championships.

I think ballers have a lot of pride as well. A lot of NBA players may want to win a championship, but many more want to be THE man...the go-to guy on a championship team, rather than to be someone who simply piggybacks along with others to get a ring.
When an NBA superstar is crying for help, I think he may be asking not necessarily for someone who is going to steal the spotlight (and shots), but rather for the right role players who will take pressure off of him.

Well think about this; Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant both made $17 million last season, yet the Spurs won the championship and the Lakers got bounced in the first round. The Lakers pay roll was $77 million while the Spurs was $65 million.
They're are a lot of differences in their situations but the main one being that the Lakers have made some f*cked up personnel decisions. Kwame Brown made the same amount as Manu Ginobli, a little over $8 million. Lamar Odom makes about $13 million while Tony Parker is making $9 million. The Spurs made far better personnel decisions and getting way more for their dollar.
That's why teams have to be careful when picking their superstar player to build around. Shaquille O'Neal and Kevin Garnett are 2 players I know, who are willing to take a pay cut in order to bring in more talent while guys like Kobe, Randolph, and Boozer try to accumulate as much money as they could.
It also has a lot to do with age and maturity. You can expect the young players to be hungry and look to establish their financial stability early in the NBA but as soon as they accumulate enough, they may take a step back and think about where their NBA career is heading and how important a championship ring will mean to their careers. Or you could have a player like Patrick Ewing who said "We make a lot of money, but we spend alot of money."

It depends on what their front offices do. It also depends if they even STAY with those teams. The Cavs WANT to keep LeBron but if he expresses any desire to go to a bigger market, that could change his chances for a championship drastically.
As much as I'd hate to say this, I think Wade will have more championships than the other two at the end of his career. I feel that the Heat (although they are horrible this year) make every possible stride to surround talent around Wade in an attempt at winning a championship.
I think the Cav's coach is not a championship caliber coach, nor do they have the right pieces in place for LeBron. I'm sorry, Verajao and Sasha Pavlovic are not the answers for LeBron. Hughes is always hurt and he's a streaky shooter, Ilgaukus is getting up in age and Gooden isn't enough offensively.

I'd say LeBron with a solid point guard (CP3, DW, SNash or JKidd) will have the most this guy can carry a team on his own and if he gets a good point guard so tht he can focus more on attackin then he can get a couple of rings.
Wade is good but he needs a solid rebounder, a good short blocker and a secondary shooter because he is only an offencive player and needs suport to go for the title like he had in 2005, Shaq and haslem for the boards, Morning blocking the shorts (also shaq 1.7BPG tht season) and Shaq, posey and williams provided with some points hence the championship.
Camelo has proved tht he needs a defencive team otherwise with offence i dont see him getting a ring. as much as he can score he cant defend so the other team just scores aswell and it will come down to who can defend better hence his lose. he got a good man in Camby but needs someone to help camby with some boards and takin chsrges and coverin the floor.

One city that practically no one would think of but is quite possible is Houston.
The Astros aren't far removed from the World Series. The Rockets are at the very least a playoff team. And the Texans are building a very respectable team who, by the way, beat the world champion Colts in week 16 of 2006.
How about Detroit? Lions had a good draft and have Mike Martz focusing ONLY on offense. Plus, the Lions play in the NFC North which gives them a fairly easy schedule. Tigers are respectable, if not good. And the Pistons are always a threat to win it all these days.

I don't know, the Pistons and the Spurs seem more interested in the game than the spotlight. They're the last two champions and most likely one of them will win it all again this year, so I'd say some pros actually do care.
Ok, to answer this I'll say this first, there are a few players that should not play in the NBA that only care about the dough (money) but since it takes so much work and effort to get to the point where say Mike Bibby of the Sacramento Kings or even LeBron James of the Cavs you couldn't do it just for money. I know money is a big incentive to do it, but I can say for a fact that most of the NBA players care about the elusive NBA champtionship. Just take Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, he gets up at 5am each morning to shoot baskets in the gymnasium to get better so he can win the championship again. There's no real reason to play in the NBA if you aren't trying to win the championship.

It is like anything else, there are people who are just in it for the money and the glory, but there are also people who want to achieve to be the best and win a championship. I remember a couple of years ago when Adonal Foyle, then of the Utah Jazz did an open interview with Sports Illistrated saying that he was only in it for the money and said that many players were doing just that. There was a revolt about that quote by the nba players that year saying that that was not the only reason they were in it. I think another way we can see this is when a player wants to be traded to a contender team... I.E. Karl Molone to the L.A. Lakers...
With the addition of Gasol, the Lakers now have one of the best line-ups in the NBA, Bryant, Odom, Bynum, Fisher, and Gasol. The Lakers might not win a championship this year, but I do think that they will pick up a championship next year and maybe a few more the other following years. As of right now, the Celtics have 16 NBA titles and the Lakers have 14. So, is it possible that the Lakers might surpass the Celtics in titles in the next few years?

YUP!! They will win in 6 and take back their championship to LA!! I think the Celtics might get one, but the Lakers are creating a better dynasty. Kobe will be the best in the NBA for about 8 more years and Bynum will soon be the "Next Shaq" (not to say that D. Howard won't), and Gasol will be a Laker for life and be a Worthy/ Pippen type!!! Hey now, I'm not Kobe fan, in fact I quite dislike the guy, but he does NOT suck. He's a fantastic basketball player and probably the biggest scoring threat in the NBA today. He can score at will, basically, breaking down defenses by himself. His assts went up last year and he still scored like a freak of nature. Again, I can't stand the guy, he's a jerk and a rapist, but...dude can ball. He sucks as a person, but there is no way anyone who is objective can say he sucks at basketball. I pick the scoring titles. It's much harder to consistantly win scoring titles. You could win a NBA Championship just for being on a great team. But to remain great enough to win a DECADE of scoring titles is AMAZING. The closet guard to MJ when it comes to scoring titles is A.I. %26amp; George Gervin (they have 4). I'll take the 6 championships (or rather, being the main figure in 6 championship teams). Charles Barkley once said that any knucklehead can score. Larry Bird said that anyone can score in the first three quarters but the real men come out to play in the 4th. Lots of people can score tons of points consistently but winning consistently is much harder. Wilt could've had more scoring titles but he sacrificed his scoring so his team would win. He won his scoring titles from 1959 to 1966. Is it a coincidence that he won a championship his FIRST year not leading the league in scoring?

You can look at any championship team and its because of their defense that they win.
a recent team that isn't known particulary for great defense is the Miami Heat. In 2006, they wouldn't have won if it wasnt for Alonzo Mourning coming off the bench and playing great interior D.
This is why the Phoenix Suns will never win a championship with Nash unless they have make a 180 turn on defense, unlike Dirk and the Mavs who are much more focused on defense (while still maintaing a superb offense) ever since Avery Johnson became coach.

It's not Nash's fault it's the Suns management. They refuse to make any changes to the lineup which is causing the Suns to stay competitive but not going anywhere else.
If the Suns were serious about winning, they would trade for a Center that can rebound and play defense, even if it means giving up Stoudemire or Marion.
Now we are reminded, in the past two games, why this otherwise great franchise has failed to win even a single NBA Championship:
(1) The Suns DON'T hustle to get rebounds (offensive rebounds especially).
(2) The Suns DON'T defend every possession equally (other than Shawn Marion, who brings it EVERY possession).
(3) The Suns DON'T force enough turnovers.
Look at the teams in the history of the NBA who have won NBA Championships and you will see all three areas covered very nicely.

Partly agree with u. I agree totally with u on the three points but u need to know they are a running team and the '96 Bulls definitely was not one. (No too sure about the '88 Lakers). The Suns obviously need a good center who can rebound and block shots (Some one like a Ben Wallace type player with better free throw shooting). But I think the Suns is lack of a good bench (ie 2 to 3 bench players who can run and defense). At the moment they only have one decent player off the bench (Brazillian Blur) )and he is offensive minded. They need some D to create fast breaks. As to the original question, of course they care, they grapped Raja Bell for defense but he is just not enough. They need some Big guys to fence the middle.

They shot 73% percent in game 1 and lost by double digits and then shot 28% from the field in Game 2 and lost by double digits again. Shaq only had like 8 points in game 1 and about the same in game 2 so if that helps anything.

Here's the thing. If you look at the stat sheet for this season, I'm supposed to pick Dallas mavericks because 5 players average in double figures for this team with Dirk leading the way with 28 a game. On the other hand, if you look at the Heat's line-up, with the exception of Wade and Haslem, this team is a championship team when they were in their prime. Most of this players were franchise players from their old teams so you cannot count their heart out even if they have aged a bit. But like what I said, Miami without Wade and Haslem is already capable of winning a championship, so with them in the mix pretty much sums up my answer. Its the MIAMI HEAT who will emerge as the NBA CHAMPs this year because of this 2 guys. Nobody can guard D.Wade and U. Haslem can make life miserable for Dirk. These 2 things plus Miami's Veterans equals another ring for Shaq and the first ones for GP, Walker, ZO, D Wade and Company.

At this point, no. They're getting totally outplayed, and it's not even Nowitzki who's beating them. Dallas is getting it from all over the place, and Miami's bench had been, up until the later part of Game 2 when the game was pretty much out of reach, invisible.
They're losing the games within the game as well. Foul shooting is horrid, and they got outrebounded by 14 in Game 2, despite the fact that Miami tied for the NBA lead in rebounds/game and outrebounded their opponents by nearly 6 boards/game during the regular season.
Home cooking might help, but you just can't see them winning a game in Dallas.
